A unit factor is nondimensional and always = 1. A unit factor converts a measurement in one unit to an equal value in another unit. For instance, if I measure an angle of 30 degrees but want to know its value in radians, I multiply by the unit factor pi radians / 180 degrees:
30 degrees * pi radians / 180 degrees = pi/6 radians.
Note that the degrees in the numerator and denominator cancel out leaving only radians, and that since pi radians = 180 degrees, the unit factor = 1.
See the ref. for more explanation and examples.
