There were any number of propaganda films during WWII, especially Russian, as well as German "documentaries" by Leni Riefenstahl.

The federal and state governments became involved in censorship early on, and created the Production Code Act. After several films--deemed offensive by the MPAA--were financial successes, it was determined the laws would have to be changed. (Two such films were The Moon is Blue, and the Man With the Golden Arm.)

Also, certain films have opened debate that otherwise might not have entered so strongly into politics, such as the aforementioned Fahrenheit 911 and Bowling for Columbine, as well as An Inconvenient Truth.

And in general, political films tend to portray the government as bad guys. Since the 60s, the political process and government as a whole were being viewed with a caustic eye (think Dr. Strangelove, Manchurian Candidate, All the President's Men), and this may be the one way that political films have, over time, affected real politics in America.

Farahheit 9/11: it is about the President and 9/11 and how the President knew about what happened, criticizing the president of the US that is, also it shows actual footage from different events and what the Pres. does in his time vs. taking care of the country. it is a **** you sort of of thing from director Michael Moore and waking up people to see the reality of politics!

another one was Al Gore's movie which is about global warming and sort of a slap in your face thing with actual facts! it is a slap in your face for Bush for not signing the treaty that most nations have vs. pollution and stuff and it is an interesting movie to watch because it talks about our actual future and what will happen if we do not slow down!
