I'm not sure if you are asking about medical doctors vs. Ph.Ds
but both are considered doctoral level degrees.
Generally, professors in academia have a Ph.D. Medical doctors hold M.D.s . At that level of education the title of Dr. is put before the person's name to indicate their mastery in that area of study.
Although most academicians hold the Ph.D.,it is not required to teach at the college level. Some schools hire adjunct faculty that may hold only a Master's degree. For some courses, people with practical experience in that field may teach.

I would say that what your professor is claiming is only half-true and he's leaving out the rest. From what I can tell, the story of Jesus is most likely a composite myth (like that of King Arthur), where the accounts of several real historical figures were combined into one single great mythical character. In 1st century Palestine (and in the years just before the start of the millenium) there were many radical independent rabbis who claimed to be the Messiah, who either rebelled against Roman rule and/or defied the corrupt authority of the Jewish Sanhedrin, and no less than 5 of these rabbis had the name YEHOSHUA (translated properly either as Joshua or Jesus). There is no recorded testimony anywhere which can point to any one specific individual who could be considered the definitive Jesus of the Gospels, and the writings of Flavius Josephus which referred to him are extremely unconvincing and were very likely a pious forgery added to his texts long after he died.

A Dr is someone who has completed their Doctorate.
A Professor is someone who has been appointed to the role of Professor - there are no fixed qualifications. Professors are leading experts in their field who will have demonstrated over several years their ability in research, teaching or practice of their field. A Professor may be someone who has worked their way up the academic hierarchy, or they may be a brilliant practioner who becomes a Professor after a successful career.

A professor is normally a doctor who teaches opposed to a doctor who doesn't. To be a professor, you are normally required to hold a P.hD in your subject and therefore qualifies you to be called doctor. Teachers normally prefer the title of professor to show they are teachers.
