My friend has had her ears pierced since she was little and now she wants to stretch her lobes. Can this be started with just using a larger guage jewelry on her own or does she need to see a piercing professional?

Try to talk her out of it. That is one of the most ludicrious things one can do these days. Try to picture a 75 year old woman with those things in her lobes. Not attractive picture, is it? What will she do with them when she "grows up"?

Piercers actually have a stretching tool to help get the next larger gauge in. From normal earrings, you'd normally go to a 10 gauge, then 8, 6, etc. It's better to do this slowly to reduce the risk of ripping your earlobe. They usually just charge you for the jewlery. The only bummer is that gun piercing holes tend to be kind of jagged, so the first gauge hop may be a little unpleasent.

There's really not much difference in a 16 and 18 gauge post. You should be fine with 18s after your ears heal up. However, 20 guages are probably going to be a good bit loose. That is, unless you are going to wear danglies- the weight of them keep the hole from closing. In fact, it stretches them a tiny bit.

I have a friend that guaged his own. All he done was bought slightly larger earrings and put them in, and he kept doing that. And when he he got to the size he wanted to keep then he quit.

OF COURSE.

Either she can go to a tattoo shop and ask for them to pierce it with the desired gauge, or she can do what I'm doing with my cartilage.

I'm just making the size bigger in my earrings. She can get a 18 gauge (assuming that she's a 20 gauge, the smallest you can go and the one that's defined "normal") and put it in.. Then wait for it to finish healing, do a 16 gauge, and repeat.

my best friend did it on her own, but she ended up ripping her earlobe in half. I would definately see a professional, but I'd think it over really well cause once you stretch it, it doesn't shrink back down to normal size again. ever.

Tell her not to do it. She will regret it when she is grown up and looking for a job. Tell her to just die her hair a funky color.
