Matter is something that has mass. Mass, according to the general theory of relativity, is caused by the warping of space. A particle that warps space is said to have mass. These particles are known as matter. The terminology is kind of redundant.
No one knows what the actual particles are made of. Wheeler tried to explain everything as being a warping or curvature of space. But failed.
The smallest units of matter, that we know of, are leptons (such as electrons) and quarks.

To suggest that matter is "made up of other things" that have mass, such as quarks and leptons, is being circular, even if it's true, because, after all, quarks and leptons are also "matter". Efforts to explain matter through "bending of spacetime curvature" has so far failed to yield good results. Saying that strings make up matter is begging the question, because "then what are strings made out of?" Like the blonde who believes that she hurts everywhere because no matter where she touches, it hurts, but in fact it's just her finger that hurts, the problem lies with the question, "made up from?" A better approach is to look at things in terms of attributes, such as persistence, mass, inertia, mode of interactions, and even location, which which is a non-trivial issue in quantum physics. Then the question should be, "Why should things have these attributes and why should things affect each other the way they do?" And perhaps the concept of "matter" may turn out to conflate with other entities that we wouldn't call "matter", or even "energy".

All Matter is made of Molecules.
Molecules are made of Atoms.
Atoms are made of Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.
Protons, Newtons and Electrons are made of Quarks.
And some physicists believe that Quarks are made of Strings.

Matter is made of tiny little particles, too. The particles that make up matter are called atoms. You can not see atoms because they are so small.Lots of atoms join together to make up matter that you can see.

Matter is "made" of energy which is configured such that it interacts with our senses to allow us to experience the universe. Energy can be in the form of light, heat, kinetic, potential, chemical, nuclear, and mass. Mass is the most stable form of energy.
