I think that Sports does alot for an economy. Apart from a tourism standpoint, it is an avenue for young interested individuals to enter into a profession they are passionate about.
On the other hand, when money is used as an excuse to enter into the sporting world, or encoursges bribery and match-fixing, or uncontrolled gambling or a machinery for governments to hide behind the 'sporting cloak' in order to justify their otherwise seemingly ludacris investments, i'd say it becomes a problem.

What are your thoughts?

The high salaries for players give specially talented individuals an opportunity to generate an income large enough to help entire communities if they are so inclined. many players give a tremendous amount of money to underprivileged communities.
Conversely, some players are treated as a commodity themselves. This gives them a warped sense of materialism. Playing only for the dollar, and believing the money makes them special.

money in a sport is not a bad thing.

Money becomes bad when it starts to play a major role in image. As in, it's not about the game itself, it's just about making ourselves look good and successful and even richer!

So yea, I agree with you.
