I dont what to hear how I should not do this because of gas. I dont care. I want to know of all the little things and big things there is to do in all 49 states. I am not going to Hawaii. If you could tell me of places you have been, or know that other people have been to and where it is in the state, that would be cool. I am going over the summer, with some friends. Thanks

You may want to drive first to Florida, then to LA, then to SF or Seattle, and then back home. Staying in hostels would be cheaper than motels. Keyword search Hostel. Las Vegas is a must see. North LA > Burbank, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Hollywood (seedy), and Santa Monica is real nice. The boardwalk at Santa Monica beach stretches for miles down past Venice Beach.

Chinatown in downtown San Francisco is at least ten blocks big. It's a must see. The Avenue of the Redwoods parallels Hwy 101 north of SF about 100 miles. That's quite an attraction.

The Rocky Mts are cool. The interstates are all level in the valleys while the mountains soar nearby. They tower above anything from back east.

Tijuana is worth the stop, too. The Hoover Dam near Las Vegas is cool. Skywalk is a glass bridge that extends partway into the Grand Canyon. It's brand new. You can look down into the canyon. I've never been to Yosemite or Yellowstone, but I bet it's cool. In states like Wyoming and Montana, you can drive for hundreds of miles without seeing much of anything.

The midwest is just a bunch of farmland for hundreds of miles. The Arch in St Louis is right near the river and interstate. You can't miss it.

We drove across country (California to Maine) it was not a vacation though, lots of work. I will say that most of middle America is boring, nothing but farms and fast food. We took Hwy 80 almost the entire way. I don't know where you're from, but the toll roads on the east coast were a surprise.
If you can do it, just do it! Don't over think it! Check Rick Steve's site for travel tips. AAA for deals and safety tips. Let people know where you are daily (texting is great). You may not always have a cell signal though. Happy travels.

When your in Michigan, make sure you go to the sand dunes along lake michigan. The sleeping bear dunes in northern MI are spectacular. 425 feet above the crystal blue surface of lake Michigan. Make sure you swim in Lake MI, too, just to say you have done it.http://away.com/gifs/gorp/location/beaches/sleeping_bear.jpg

Also, visit Niagra Falls and maybe washington DC, they are both cool.

have a great trip and be safe. I envy you, as i have always wanted to do this type of thing. Also, remember to bring some good CD's.

Oh, and PS- get a cb radio for your car. Its a blast to talk to trucker and rednecks on them. Plus you can get warnings about traffic, accidents, and it can help you if you break down and you dont have a cell signal.

This is a great idea , I did it a few years back and really had a great time an many levels . A few words of advice though ... If you are going with friends a trip of this magnitude can make or break a friendship. (Me and my friends went to baseball games in 11 states) If you are taking a co-ed trip THINGS HAPPEN .. He likes her but she likes him .... Alcohol .... Everyone pitching in equally.... Take those things into consideration then HAVE A GREAT TIME... you will remember it the rest of your life.
