Every time one of our civil liberties is taken by the government, we are hurt. As a nation, and as a free people. Our own govt is trampling on the fabric of the Constitution, and the core values that this country was founded upon.
People ask what rights I personally have lost. The right to counsel. The right to due process. The right to privacy. The right to assemble. Habeas corpus. Unreasonable searches. Warrantless wiretapping. The list of rights and civil liberties that have been trampled on by the Bush regime grows longer every year.
Every one of those rights stipped away was mine. Just because I never needed to invoke them didn't make them less mine. And just because you haven't needed them yet doesn't make them less yours.
We only have those rights we choose to defend. Only those rights we can defend. And if we do not defend them, we lose them. Not just for those who need them now -- but for all of us.

In honor of Pastor Martin Niemöller:
First they came for the 6th Amendment, but I hadn't been accused of a crime, so I didn't object to denial of counsel.
Then they came for the 4th Amendment, but I wasn't talking to anyone overseas, so they wouldn't be monitoring me.
Then they came for the rest of the 4th Amendment, but I only called my mother, so there was nothing suspicious in my phone records.
Then they came for the 1st Amendment, but I never associated with criminals, so I didn't worry about being convicted purely based on what other people might do.
Then they came for the 14th Amendment, but I never really understood the rules for Due Process (and wasn't allowed an attorney), so I didn't object.
Then they came for the rest of the 1st Amendment, but I never told anyone about what the government was doing, so again I remained silent.
Then they came for the 5th Amendment, ...... and I no longer had the right to remain silent.

I wouldn't say that any of them got taken away but many of them are threatened/weakened. I don't really feel like doing a long discussion of it given that there is so much that can be said and that I actually just got out of my graduate class that was discussing this about an hour and a half ago so I'm tired, but one main one is the fourth amendment. The burden of probable cause has been greatly diminished and warrants can now be obtained by a secret court. This means that should someone be subject to a search as a result, they will have no way of contesting it in court because they have no way of knowing what the reasoning behind its issuance was... I agree with Corn

The FBI can now have your medical records turned over to them without you being notified by your doctor. This is without a warrant or probable cause by the way.
Oh so you didn't mean those other pesky civil liberties that don't really matter. But this other set of civil liberties. Give me a break Julia.

A good question, asked in an honest way.
Well, the terrorists or terrorist supporters in this country may have lost the right to communicate privately with their cohorts in other nations, but I don't think that's even mentioned in the Patriot Act.

Put it this way, if there were any citizens who were individually wronged by the patriot act. The news media would have a feeding frenzy...I havn't heard of anything.
