No. You can hold a real estate license and not be a Realtor if you don't want to be one. Being a Realtor shows people that you adhere to a higher code of ethics than that required to only be a licensee. You may have to be a Realtor though to participate in the local MLS.

The above answer is correct. You dont have to be a Realtor to get your real estate licence. Like stated above a Realtor is held to a greater code of ethics, but if you dont join NAR you are prohibited from using the title Realtor on your business cards or anything else. You would have to use sales associate, real estate professional, or something like that. To gain access to the MLS you may not have to be a Realtor. It depends on your state. In Pennsylvania you do not.
