What's a good way to teach yourself to play guitar?

Question

My mom has an acustic guitar and she's had it restrung on two of the strings. She doesn't know how to play and she wants me to learn, and so do i. We are busy with a new house, and tons of redecorating, so we don't really have themoney, nor do i ahve the time for lessons. I have herad of many many people teaching themselves to play, but how does one start. i have some basics in music, as i'm in junior high chior, but i've also heard that intrument music is quite different than vocal music. any help would be great...thanx!!

okay...is there like a book or something that deosn't cost 88$? i'm gonna have to buy this myself most likely

I started on an old gut-string, wall hanger made in Mexico called "Fata Vasco". Asked a friend if I could borrow it for a few weeks.
You can get a Mel Bay book for about $ 5.00 you don't need fancy to start, you need simple. Go with the most elementary book you can find. Start slow, it takes more than a week.
