My question is: If someone hacks into my computer and uses it to send-out Spam, does that only happen if I have a mail client (like Outlook Express), or does it happen anyway?

Most spam programs have their own mail client built in but they will harvest addresses from your mail client if you have one.

You do not need to have a mail client installed for a spammer to hijack your system and use it to relay spam. Most spam spewing malware has its own SMTP server built-in so an e-mail client is not needed.

Set up a firewall, run antivirus and antispyware software all the time and keep it up to date.

I have avoided outlook Express. I am better off....! The spam may be spread through many ways…! Sometimes spam may be due to viruses or spyware. Many hours are wasted due to spam email. However, by taking simple precautions while giving out your email and installing updated free software, you can prevent spam. More info available at
