i just wrote a letter today to the editor of a newspaper on this very subject. when people make the statement that "blacks use it", they make it seem like its a universal thing throughout the entire black community. it is not!! a small segment of society, namely the hip-hop industry has taken to using this word. as usual, society had chosen to take the actions of the few to mean the attitude of the many. it is a hate filled, ugly, vile word that should not be used by anyone & it's especially ugly when used by young people who have no clue as to its origins. it is not a word that can be adapted or "taken back" or any of the other nonsense people (who are looking to capitalize on its usage) come up with.

The main think I want people to take away from this answer is that ALL Blacks DO NOT USE THE WORD "******" NOR IS IT OKAY WITH US. Its usage IS AN ACT OF SELF-HATRED BY WEAK MINDED, IGNORANT INDIVIDUALS.

Sorry about the caps. I just hate to think that there are folks out there who think we all use this ugly word.

This word should be obsolete...It has one purpose, only in a derogatory sense....It's never OK to use it. If you say it to the wrong person, it will probably get you hurt.. Use caution..Under certain circumstances ..when I do here it being said , it is usually used amongst friends..certain cliches, mostly men, most of the time they are kidding around...I have heard it used as a racial slur. Its a real attention getter....Its like fingernails screeching down a chalkboard, its not nice and it can bring out the worst in people.

It's certainly okay to say when you're referring to the word in a conversation ABOUT the word (like the one you're having now). There is actually a book called "******" that discusses its origins and how it's come to be used throughout the years.

As for saying it under other circumstances, that's entirely up to you. I personally don't feel it's appropriate to say as it carries so much baggage with it, and I personally don't feel it's ever okay to use the word when referring to another human being.

If you've ever watched "Scrubs," JD sometimes asks Turk if he can say it (Turk is his best friend who is black), and even though they're super tight buddies, Turk never lets him say it since JD is white.

I live in Australia so people here probably don't feel as strongly about it. I have black friends and I personally never use it, but I see no problem with it really unless someone is really offended by it or if you use it on someone you don't know or with the intention of offending them.

One of my white friends uses it when talking to my black friend, simply because they both think it's funny when my white friend's little sister gets all shocked and worried that he will get offended. However, both my friends would not be offended because they know that any of our friends saying it do not mean it in a bad way. Also, seeing as one is Indian and one is Sri Lankan it may not have the same affect as if it was said to an African American or something. I don't think it's really a racist term used much with Indians and Sri Lankins.

It isn't really said all that much here in Australia anyway. In fact the only time I've heard it in a conversation is when my friends are trying to shock the little sister.

It's strange that black people use it, but say it's racist if other people use it.... that's called a double standard

Personally, I don't talk that way. Other people should not be demeaned in such a manner.

As to the opinion above then, why are they demeaning each other and why is that right??? There might be less using of the N word by whites if blacks were to use it less between themselves and show more respect for each other.

It makes me mad when anyone but Black people use it, although I think it is a dumb word to use in general.

2 me... using the N word is equivalant to using any curse word or obsenity....So if you have a foul mouth...I guess it would be expected to come out of your mouth.... If you don't you wont

Depends - if the "N" word is "no" I have no problem with it - if its the racial slur it shouldn't ever be used.
