how quickly after having sex can you take a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant?

Most home pregnancy tests are only accurate starting a day or two before the date you expect your period. Even then, they're only something like 80% accurate, so you'd be better off waiting till the actual date you expect your period to reduce your chances of getting a false negative. Or get the boxes that come with 2 or 3 in a box and take one early and another one on the date you expect your period (if your period doesn't come, of course).
A blood test at your doctor's office is more accurate and can be taken earlier, but I'm not sure how early you can do it. Check with your doctor.
Unfortunately, there isn't really a way to know before at least a week or two after having sex. That's a long time to wait, I know.

Here is the timetable :
Woman ovulates around the middle of the cycle. If she has sex during this time, the sperm can fertilize the egg. After that the fertilized egg starts dividing and later on implants in the uterus. This takes about 7-10 days after fertilization. The hcg hormone reaches the urine in detectable amounts a few days after implantation. This is also around the time the next period would be expected - but missed.

In short, if you have sex during ovulation, you need to wait at least two weeks to take the test. Wait till the first day of your expected period to test.

Have your doctor do the blood test to be sure. They show the pregnancy hormones much sooner than the urine tests.
