Right click the desktop -> Properties -> Screen Saver -> Power

Play with those settings especially Standby.

It must be off or in hibernate mode to use no power. Standby uses a little power. The default settings are in the power control panel.

Hibernate stores the entire memory so it can restart in the same condition. Once the save is done the power turns off.

Standby just turns off the screen and drive and just maintains memory.

Just turn it off before you close it.

If you just close it, it will go into suspend mode. A small amount of battery energy will be used until the battery is nearly drained when it will then go into hibernation mode and power down completely. When you open it back up, the battery will be nearly dead.

Even in the standby mode, or sleep mode, the battery is being used a little. If you are not going to be using it for fifteen minutes or more the best thing to do is turn it off.

i know on my power management settings like my power meter and all that (i have a hp i don't know if it's different for anyone else) i went into power properties then advanced and in there it said: if i close the lid of my computer: and i could choose form shut down, standby, or hibernate or do nothing. i choose standby. that way it doesn't use a lot of battery power to shut down.

turn it all the way off and not hibernate it ... if a battery sits for several days it will natuarlly lose charge over time ... but it shouldnt empty for a couple of weeks at least ..
