Polishing can reduce the level of fine detail, degrading the coin. Leave them as they are for maximum value, ESPECIALLY if they are older or rare coins.

Also, when collecting almost ANYTHING it is more desirable to leave its natural finish intact. This is called "toning" in coin collecting circles and "patina" in antique collecting circles, and shows that the item really is as old as it seems to be. An old item without the proper patina is immediately suspected of being a fake, and even if it turns out to be genuine the value is almost always drastically reduced by cleaning or refinishing.

Never clean coins if you are collecting them for their value. Cleaning them REDUCES the value. Talk to a coin dealer.

You might polish them if you want to but if you want them to look real old you don't have to but you might have a hard time reading them for date and mint but if you are selling them I would polish them. But it's your choose
