I'm almost 15 and am looking into getting a job at the local bowling alley. I am going to work at the counter, giving out the lanes, delivering messages over the intercom, giving shoes, handling money, and basically be a cashier. How much should I make per hour?

The federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour. President Clinton gave states the power to set their own minimum wages higher than the federal rate. Currently, 18 states have higher minimum wages. The link below has details on all of the states. In fact, there is a special youth minimum wage for people under age 20. Employers can pay their workers who are under 20 a wage of $4.25 for the first 90 calendar days of employment. See the second link for details. There are also maximum hours allowed for workers age 16 and under, and you're not allowed to do certain kinds of things (working certain machinery, etc.).

As far as what you should ask for in salary, you probably won't have a say in that, at least not now. Your job is an entry level position, with no real skills needed, so don't count on anything over minimum wage. It couldn't hurt to find out what others are paid who are doing the same job (at the same bowling alley and at others in the area).

$5.15/hr is the federal minimum wage. Some states such as California have a higher minimum wage, and workers are entitled to the higher of the two wages. You can check with the department of labor for your state. Just search for "_____ (state name) department of labor"

You can expect to make $5.15 - $6.00/hr.

Depends on where you live.

Most employers have a set rate of pay for a given job description. You have to take what you get. your only option is to not take the job. At fifteen, you don't have too many choices, and you have to start somewhere. As you gain experience, you can be more demanding, or at least expect more.
