Wives tale? And Why?

My mom always used to say, "Whistlin' women and crowin' hens never come to no good ends." Like whistling is somehow unfeminine and it'll get me in trouble.

She refused to teach me to whistle, though she's good at it (she can also whistle through her teeth like in "Whistle Stop," the whistling song in the Disney animated Robin Hood, my favorite animated movie. But my teeth are too close together, so I can't.)

Eventually, I figured it out and now I do it all the time. All I need is a crowin' hen and I'll be all set.

Hmm, there is a lot, but my favorite one is the animal that scares you when you are pregnant is what your child will look like, because I always wondered what a scorpion-spider child would look like.

"It's bad luck to kill a spider in the house." Just because I've heard it since I was little, and it came from my Ukrainian grandmother. I only kill spiders if they're tiny, too; if they're big, I yell for my husband to squish them.

If a black cat crosses your path, you'll have bad luck because I have a black cat, and so far, I haven't had any bad luck! (My sister has though!)
