He died because at the end the little boy is talking to Jena Malone and he says he dies and Jena Malone says she didn't know him. So he did travel back in time to solve all the problems that followed after the engine smashed into his house when he wasn't there. At the end he's in the bed when it hits and dies.

I thought he was killed when the plane engine smashed into the house in the onset of the story. I love that movie!!
