Buy the R1.Ducati's are very nice but also very costly to repair and hard to find a good mechanic. The R1 is a very powerful bike and finding parts and mechanics is fairly simple.

How do you plan on riding your bike? Canyons? Track? City?

Canyons - Ducati
Track - R1
City - R1

Maintenance on the Ducati demands respect! It WILL under perform if you don't maintain it properly. Maintenance on the R1 is more forgiving.

As far as power, the Duc has 748cc's and the Yamaha has 998.

As far as styling, the new '07 R1 should be out soon... and it is DEAD SEXY! The 749 is a Ducati, but the styling looks too German retro! But that's just my humble opinion.

As far as availability both are hard to find. The Yamaha almost always sells out in California and there aren't too many Ducati dealers out here either.

R1's usually turn heads, but not as much as Ducatis do, simply due to the rarity. People usually say, "Whoa! Ducati!!!" when they see one on the street. Then they say "What was that?!" When they see an R1 zoom by.

As far as after market accessories, Yamaha has more toys and mods.

Personally, I agree with the comment above, R1's ARE for riders and Ducs are for posers!

Whichever you choose, you are getting a quality bike from legendary companies.

Good luck and be safe!!!

Buy the R1 unless you REALLY get off on everyone saying "wooooowwww a Ducati!!"... Ducatis are expensive and uncomfortable to ride. The R1 outclasses the 749 in every category and is exponentially better for street use. Like I said though, you are going to get more head turns out of the Ducati, so if that's what you are looking for then by all means buy Italian.

I would personally go for the Ducati, because Italian bikes are stunningly beautiful. We could have a LENGTHY discussion about the differences between Japanese and Italian engineering, but suffice to say that Italians believe in aesthetics as much as performance, and they build everything by hand.

I have been told by owners of Ducs that the bike seems eternally "bored" unless you ride it hard and FAST. Nobody hates Ducati.
