I saw a cartoon once that if you want to see the world fly by you, drive at the speed limit. That I have found to be indeed true. I have never passed (overtaken) a single car when I drive at 55 mph. Elsewhere I have also read that it is better to merge with the traffic instead of being a laggard; which is obvious from the many a sighting of the disruption in the flow of traffic on a freeway caused by a lone slow-moving vehicle. Therein lies the rub. When everyone else is driving above 60 mph on a freeway with 55 mph limit, what should be the morally-sound behavior; obey the legal limit and thereby cause traffic disruptions with the resultant increase in the chances of an accident or just simply violate the law to not cause such a harm.

So your question is "which is morally better: speeding and being safer or sticking to the limit and being less safe?"

My greatest moral obligation is to preserve and protect the lives and well-being of the passengers in my car. If that means going 5-10 miles over the speed limit because most people are doing 20 + miles over, then so be it. (Most of the time staying to the right and doing the speed limit works just fine.)

I go with the flow of traffic. If you have a red sports car or a noisy muffler, the cop will notice you first if he wants to hand out a ticket. If you decide to obey the speed limit, stay in the right lane so faster traffic can pass you on the left. (If you see an almond Neon behind you, that's me.)

Traffic flow is an interesting social, and mathematical, problem.

If you don't go with the flow, then stay to the right. People will happily pass by you.

If you go with the flow, stay out of the left-most lane. You will still bottle up traffic that wants to go faster.

Most importantly, when faster than flow meets slower than flow in a crunch of metal, don't rubber-neck. You will again cause traffic flow problems.

Get in the right lane and do the speed limit. People will go around you.

What's worse if when dorks drive 55 in the middle or left lane.

People in the US have no concept of lane discipline

I drive at reasonable and prudent speed-- if that's 80 for me, then so be it. If its 25 becuase of traffic, that's what I drive.

You should deff. stay at the speed limit, just because they want to be dangerous and harm their lives dosn't mean you should to. They have speed limits for a reason and that is to keep people safe so if i was you i would stay the speed limit.

I always drive at the limit (not over).
Let the speed merchants zip by.
I always arrive relaxed.
Bet they don't!

Anyway, what's all the rush? To get home and veg on the couch or waste time on here?

ninety 9.9% of the time, I stress under the value cut back because of the fact it is the excellent factor to do. the different 0.01% of the time, i will circulate each of ways as much as the value cut back whilst getting on the throughway... yet at last gets backpedal to under the cut back. human beings look to think of that the value cut back is a minimum. needless to say, it is common and perfect that somebody dies each twenty minutes in a motor vehicle twist of destiny.
