I am having a difficult time deciding on a major in school. I have an AS in Graphic Design. I enjoyed the courses, but I never did anything with the degree. I decided to go back to school to get my BS in Business, because that seemed like a practical choice. I am just not sure if business is the right degree for me, but I don't know how I really feel about the alternatives. My school offers a Certificate in Gerontology (study of aging) which you can get with any major, but they also offer a BS in Urban Studies with a concentration in Gerontology and a BS in Psychology with a concentration in Gerontology.

Which of these options do you think is better? Should I stick with Business and get the certificate in Gerontology, or switch to either Urban Studies or Psych and do a concentration? I think I would like to work in either a retirement community or nursing home as an Activities/Events Director/Planner. Thanks for your help!!

You are putting the proverbial cart before the cart.

First decide what you would like to do. Only then should you go out and find how to get there.

Do as I did. Go out and find people who do jobs that you want to do. You can find out what their job is like, if they like their careers, what their daily roles are like, what they dislike about it, what the salary range is like and the progression one can make with that career.

Most people stumble through life, getting to where they are going by accident. Don't let this happen to you. What do you value in life? Do you want to enjoy your job and don't care about money? Do you hate working with people? Do you love money and the things that it can buy? Do you thrive when there is competition?

Once you have found the field that you want to work in, then the major is a no-brainer.
