These are some Micosoft run time libraries that are required to run applications developed with .NET software development tools. Distributing the libraries once centrally means that the developer doesn't have to ship them with the software and they always stay up to date.

They come in two flavours 1.1 & 2.0. Both basically do the same thing but are subtly different and can co-exist happily on you PC together. Unfortunately there are the usual MS security bugs found in these products therefore windows update will auto update them as new fixes come out to make sure your PC stays secure.

Should not cause any problems with the daily running of your PC.

the .net (read "Dot Net") Framework is normal, don't worry. It is a component that supports certain types of applications.
.net framework also supports a lot of what is on the internet today, but that is a little different explanation than the OS component you are asking about.

.net framework is required if you want to run programs, that
are based on it. It's a bit difficult to explain if you're a user.
Maybe you know java. It's not really like that. But you also
need to install java to make programs work that are based
on that. It was released after XP. So you have to install or
update it seperately from the system.
