Troubleshooting automotive problems?

I have an 1988 Izuzu pickup that I'm having trouble getting it running smoothly. When I start it I have to feather the accelerator to keep it running. When I try to drive it it bogs down and won't go.
If i hold the gas pedal down it back fires and sputters and evently dies. Can anyone give me amy tips what to look for and how to fix it?

check ignition timing turn distributor til it sound smooth back and forth..good luck

check the cat and when is the last time it was tuned up????
