I want to buy a laptop off ebay, however, most of the sellers are asking for cheques or bankers draft etc - is this safe? and is there a potential for fraud? If so, am i able to get my money back?

Does ebay have any return guildelines to abide by when dealing with cheques etc?

All answers appreciated. Thanks.

Laptops are one of the things targeted by scammers on Ebay so you have to be very careful. If you pay by cheque and it goes belly up you have no 'rights' to an automatic refund. Paypal nearly always comes down on the side of the buyer so with high risk items such as this you will get your refund if it doesn't arrive. Ask your question on the Community Boards Answer Centre, they're brill at answering any kind of Ebay related question and cos they're just people helping people and dont work for Ebay you will get an answer really quickly.
Good Luck

Ebay is a place where buyers & sellers bid and transact. Ebay doesn't get involved in the whole transaction between the two. Electronics are risky to buy especially if you don't know if something's wrong with it and such. No guarantee you won't get your money back when seller asks for checks. I never buy electronics there.

If you want a decent price laptop, buy from HP's website. A description of the product models are given to help you select which model. They're decently priced. Link below.

Well you should be carefull about seller who ask only that type of payment. Butsaying that, you you do pay for something that is over £25 and don't receive your goods, you can fill a claim to ebay, and ebay will compense you for your lost. read the feedback of the seller first before to buy. You have to know that when a seller ask that kind of payment for an expensive item is because Paypal charge about 5% fee to the seller so they lose loads of money that's why some people prefer that kind of payment.

My advice is to buy your laptop from www.dell.com I did and I have had no problems with it. If you buy from Ebay you are asking for trouble. The seller could easily have a dud address nd what will happen then once you have paid by cheque, Nothing. I have been conned on Ebay a few times and I never use it ever. I have found a more genuine site what was reccommended to me by a friend. It is www.ebid.co.uk

I would be VERY suspicious. A chav down the street from me has got caught for selling fictitious goods. Laptops, MP3 players and such like. A genuine seller will accept paypal. I always pay through paypal on my credit card, as with your credit card you have some guarantee.

I, also, would stick to auctions that use Paypal. You get a certain amount of insurance that way. With a bank draft, you have no recourse if they send you a piece of junk that doesn't work. They've got your money, so you're out of luck.

Set up a paypal account through ebay. If you get scammed with it, there is protection for you up to $5000 or something.

Aside from the money issue - I wouldn't buy a used laptop without trying it out first... Actually, I don't think I'd buy anything other than a new one. Speaking from experience.

As everyone has said, buy from someone that accepts PayPal

... but just as important, check that they have very good feedback - preferably 100%.
