Humans are a social animal. Like most, we have this concept of "us" and "them". We "like" and help out people that we perceive as being "like us." And we hate, hurt, drive away or try to force change upon those who are different. It's sort of a "war" mentality and we classify other organisms as being either on our side or against us.

The bigger the scale of the war, the more scared we get, and the more we are willing to accept differences in our allies. For example, we might "hate" the Republicans because we are Democrats. But we might bond together with the republicans when a terrorist tries to take over the airplane that we're both riding. And we may bond with the terrorists too when an alien race attacks the earth...

But there's always some form of "us" and "them." And we always bond with "us" and are afraid of "them". The factors that define these groups depend on what is convenient for us at any one time.

Usually, the person who hates gay people a LOT is also gay, and is ashamed of being gay because society usually says that being gay is wrong. So this person feels that maybe he/she can get rid of his/her feelings if he/she beats up people who are gay, in a way to prove that he/she isn't gay. Eventually, the person realizes that he/she can't do anything about his/her sexuality, and decides to accept it. I've seen this happen quite often. In fact, the Reverend Mel White used to be really anti-gay - he wrote speeches for Jerry Falwell to say bad things about gay people. Then he came out of the closet, revealing that he himself was gay.

Some say it's their own self hate. Same say it's their religious values and some just don't know. I believe that people fear what they don't understand and hate what they fear. That's why they hate us because they don't understand us and that's wrong. Some say it's because the bible says homosexuality is a sin. So they beat us, kill us, and spread their hate in the name of Jesus. But the people who do that are, in my opinion, not true Christians or whatever their religion maybe. They read the bible without truly understanding what they words mean. They think they are suppose to hate homos but they bible DOES NOT TEACH PEOPLE TO HATE SINNERS. So people hate us for all different types of reasons based on a number of things.

I've often wondered that myself. I think it has a lot to do with the way they were raised. Overly religious parents, bigots, and racist, ect. It's very complicated. I wish the whole world would just accept that some people are different, and some people aren't. You cannot simply shun something that is unfamiliar or different, so you have to get used to it and accept it.

Some people just gotta hate. Or ... maybe they have a wee niggle of a "bi" feeling now and then and it scares them? Or maybe they're scared it's contagious? Or maybe they're worried that there's one more group of people out there who won't find them attractive? Who knows. Some people just gotta hate. If it weren't for being gay it would be for being too dark or too white or too cute or too smart or too rich or too poor. Fact is ... most people are just plain f****d up.

Because it is wrong.
I agree gay people do deserve sympathy but I still think it's wrong. I don't hate them or anything but maybe some people have a more strong opinion, that's where their hate comes.

Its usually today's machoistic society and the view that Heterosexuality is right. Alot of them justify it by their religious beliefs (mainly the three Abrahimic Faiths). Others can be homophobic so that no one suspects that they themselves are gay (which is true in alot of cases).

Fear. Most people fear what is unknown....and being gay is something which most straight people have no knowledge of.

Enlighten yourself, read, get to know a gay person and the fear will eventually subside.

Ignorance, fear of something that they don't understand, stupidity, having a small and narrow mind, lack of education. And that is just for starters.

Ignorance and a lack of Christian values (on the part of the haters).
