alot of things could make this happen but a common one is you have water in your gas. another is you're timing is off. if it idles low (around 800 to 1000 rpm) then you might have to turn it up some. it's hard to decide. is it an older car or has it been wrecked? alot of factors can make that happen. wish i could help you more. i'd at least get it checked by a pro.

you need to state more info for a better answer----if you have a 5 year old BMW you could have a cracked speedo and tacho plate behind the indicator dials.....need new tach/rpm meter ... check all wires for connectivity
