Tungsten mostly, but there are other metals used. There are also gasses that glow too in bulbs that have no filiment wire.

There are different types. You have to make sure you have a positive, negative, and ground. Usually for making an electrical light socket in the house, I believe the wire is called 14-3. 14 is the gauge and 3 stands for the 3 wires ( positive'black", negative"white", and ground"green")
