A good laptop like my own will take any wireless feed providing your in a city or town with plenty of wireless connections. I went to NYC and I had hundreds of very fast connections at my disposal. And the most common wireless feed is IEEE802.11 (a/b/g) (Standard) ask for this wireless adapter and your good. Happy surfing.

Any brand of wireless router will work. There are limitations as to how far away you can be from the router before you lose connection but you can pretty much go anywhere you like. There are settings on the wireless router that you will need to turn on to get your laptop to work with the router but the brand will not matter.

it does not need to be the same brand - just the same type.

your laptop will probably support 802.11 B, and 802.11 G (and maybe 802.11 A, and 802.11 N).

You will be able to use the Internet from any hotspot that uses the same band as your computer supports (and most hotspots will support multiple bands). Just be aware that some hotspot charge per use (like what you will find at a Starbucks).

Enjoy your wireless freedom!

Your internal/external wireless card will be able to pick up other wireless networks wirth no problem. It does not have to be same brand. You could pick up a Linksys connection just as easy as a DLink or other wireless brand. You won't be able to connect if the connection is encrypted tho.
