I've heard bits and pieces, but does anyone really know how that story came about and why it was associated with Christmas? I know what Christmas is, (the day that Jesus was born), but I would love to here the real story behind Santa Claus.

I believe it's a story of an old monk in the Netherlands, who long ago gave food and gifts to the poor children in his village at Christmastime. His name was Nicholas, of which 'Claus' is a variation of.

His generosity became legendary until his name because synonymous with the spirit of giving and of making children happy.

Later on, he was described in the poem "T'was the Night Before Christmas" which was based on this legend of a kindly Christmas spirit. Coca-Cola eventually came up with the image of him we are familiar with today, to market their products at this time of year.

There is the tale of St. Nickolas who was a real saint. He did great works for children and some believe that is where one of the stories started. Down through time, as the first reply said...German background brought stories of Santa as did other various countries that came to America. There are vast places either on the net, at the library, or other resources that could supply you with the facts or fiction.

Santa Clause is based off a man named St. Nicholas who lived in the early century A.D. St. Nicholas was a man known for his generosity and kindness. The Tradition of giving gifts on christmas was started by him. He would stuff poor childrens shoes with goodies.

Then commercialism came and used the myth and transformed him into a jolly old man with a white beard who lived at the north pole and made reindeer fly. Naturally kids wanted more stuff so the commercialism was mainly done for profit.

Santa and the reindeer are believed to originate from the Norse god Odin. Then in the Middle Ages, there was a Catholic bishop named St Nicholas who was famed for giving gifts to children at Christmastime. Other cultures have their own similar figures. Italy has a legend of a female Strega who is very similar to St Nicholas.
