There are two ways you can make diaper cakes:

"Blankets as Icing" is the first way. Take the diapers....roll them up and secure them with a rubberband. Arrange them in a circular pattern standing them up on end. The bottom tier should be the largest, obviously. Once you have the circular size you want....secure those diapers with a ribbon tied all the way around them. NEXT....remove the diapers one by one and then REMOVE those rubberbands...inserting them back into the circle before removing the next one. (The rubberbands are kind of funky for the recipient. The lack of rubberbands will make them wonder how exactly you did it, too!!!). Create as many tiers as you want!! For an even better cake....wrap those layers with recieving blankets and secure them with the diaper pins in the back. You can even tuck items into the blankets, into the ribbon....and (of course) don't forget the plush animal topper!!!

The second method is "diapers as icing". This one can be kind of tricky. You want to arrange the diapers in a pinwheel pattern. You want them to be overlappying in a cirle (do NOT roll them). The best way to do this is to stand diapers on sides in groups of ten. Arrange those groups into a cirle/wagon wheel pattern. Once you have enough diapers in the circular pattern....you will want to wrap a ribbon loosely around them and then cinch it (make sure you don't have ribbon slide out underneath!!). If all goes well the diapers will create the pinwheel effect. You will want to spend some time spacing the diapers evenly once you have secured the ribbon. You want the layers to be tight....so they don't come apart on the way to the shower/hospital/etc!! The result is a diaper cake that looks remarkably like cake!!! When I make THESE cakes I stuff the insides with baby goodies and let the cake really make people take a second glance. (For a three tier cake....use 50 diapers on the bottom tier, 25 on the middle tier, and 10 on the top tier to achieve a good tier proportion ratio!!!)

I make diaper cakes as a side-business. Feel free to contact me (via email) if you need some assistance in designing and building your cake!!

I just made one of these last month for a baby shower, I bought a pack of diapers (Luvs) and rolled the whole pack. I took one diaper and rolled it up and put a rubber band around it. I done the whole pack like this. I made a two tier cake. I got a piece of cardboard and cut out two circles. One larger than the other to help carry it on. I put the largest circle on bottom (about the size you want the cake) and stood the diapers one at a time up. And then I put the other circle on top of the bottom layer and done the top. When i got done stacking the diapers I put a really pretty lace around the center of both layers to help hide the rubber bands. I topped it off with a beautiful bow, I am sorry if i confused you. There are plenty of sites that have pictures of them and I just picked one and made it. They are beautiful gifts.
