I have a 73 Chevy LUV. I put a band new alternator on the truck and it didnt work, so I took it back and got another one and it not charging either. Do yall think my voltage regulator is bad. I am stuck on this one. Can anyone out there help me out?

This is the second Alternator I have put on in 2 days. My voltage regulator is up from the Alternator. The battery might be bad. The truck will fire up if I jump it off but other then that nothing happens. I tried to pull the pos term. with the engine running and yes the truck does cut off... Thanks for the help so for but still need more help...

Simple test - No tools required :)
With the lights and heater off......Loosen the positive cable on the battery while the truck is running and remove it quickly (careful not to touch any metal with it)....if the alternator & reg are working the truck will stay running..if it is shot the truck will die.

I see someone questioned what I said. Try it pinhead, if the alternator is charging it will run on that voltage without a battery in the car. if the charging system isn't working, the car will die without power from the battery. It's A TEST to see if it is charging or your battery is shot! Geesh

How can the truck run with the positive terminal off ??? The alternator connects to the positive terminal to charge the battery. You need a voltmeter, borrow or buy one, you have already spent more on the alternator than the meter costs. Aparts store should have a simple meter for $10 or les, nothing fancy, just a volt meter. Get the engine started, put the voltmeter probes on the battery terminals, watch polarity, the voltage should be approx. 15 volts if not the alt. is not charging. Check all wiring and the fuse, most alt. have a fuse in the fuse block. If every thing checks ok and still no charge, turn off engine and check the positive terminal on the alternator to ground. If 12 volts it means the positive wire to the battery is ok. If no voltage you have a brohen wire between the alt. and battery. I would guess your voltage reg. is internal in the alt. the parts store can tell you for sure. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. Old mechanics proverb.

did you comprehend that the alternator has never been meant to be a battery charger yet people use them for that purpose and then favor to entice close why their alternator went out. at the same time as replacing an alternator this is had to that the battery be completely charged(with a battery charger) earlier placing out the vehicle, or you in simple terms ruined yet another alternator. Alternators are meant to maintain the autos battery.

It is possible you purchased a bad alternator. You can check the battery with the engine off and observe the voltage. Then, crank the vehicle up and check the battery to see if there is an increase in voltage.

yeah, id check your battery like the other man said, most alternators have internal voltage regulators, but since your rolling a 73, you might not. but if the voltage regulator was out i think it will overcharge your battery, causing it to swell, at least thats what happened with my old truck. if you goto most auto parts store, they will test your battery/electrical system.

Yep it's voltage regulator. Yall be driving down the road and the lights will get dim and you'll have to keep turning up the radio.... Been there done that.

go to Sears and buy yourself a cheap multimeter and you can learn just where your problem is at .... at the battery,,at the alternator, or at the regulator.... the multimeter will help you around the house also...good luck... did you ask the auto supply store to check the ALT.. before you left the store????? ...AND take a look at the cables that hook-up the batt. and charging system ... maybe the ALT wires and or connections need to be renewed........

I believe your voltage regulator is seperate from your generator in that vehicle, should be alongside the radiator on the drivers side, replace it and all should be good to go.

voltage regulator sound like your problem but if that dont fix your problem check your wire make sure you dont have bad wiring if you see any that are dry rotting then this could be the problem .........i would look them over good before i replaced the regulator and if they look good then i would replace it
