Hi there,
Some of the most recommended programs on here always seem to be AVG or Avast - although this is likely to be because they are free? Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.
The same goes for Spybot and Adaware. In fact if you had AVG, Spybot and Adaware installed, you would surprisingly only be protected from circa 60% of all known malware (viruses, adware, spyware, trojans, etc).
Norton and McAfee are the "best known" security products, which are currently protecting against something like 98.3% and 97% of all known viruses - a much better score. However, both of these are known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.
If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating.

Look for one that is not as common as McAfee or norton because virus creators make their viruses based on what is updated for the most common antivirus software.

Here is a list of anti virus programs, 1 being rated a best and 58 being rated last. At least the list can give you some direction to do your own investigating, since there are so many opinions on whats best.

Try looking for an anti-virus program that's free such as AVG. I heard that's good. I use Verizon Yahoo Online protection. A coworker told me that the free ones are just as good as the ones you have to pay.

I concure AVG is free so there is no risk if you don't like it. Unlike other free antivirus programs it has updates and many features that paid programs do. Plus it's not spyware completely free and completely safe. Only downside is that when scanning your computer it really slows it down.
Good Luck

seems most pay anti-virus programs have a yearly renewal to there subscriptions/updates.
so you are wanting a free anti-virus program.
avg or avast are very popular in this section of answers, problem is there detection.protection and removal is lacking.
if they cant detect or remove something that others can, how good is that?

Panda is good, they remove viruses if you get them, it also removes spyware from ur computer, all the others don't.
Panda rocks, Macafee isn't worth a poop. AND AVG MAYBE GOOD AND FREE, BUT IF YOU GET A VIRUS IT WILL NOT REMOVE IT FROM YOUR COMPUTER, YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR A GOOD ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM. AVG IS A TRIAL DOWNLOAD TO SEE IF YOU LIKE IT, BUT IT WILL NOT REMOVE VIRUSES FROM UR COMPUTER.
