HERE'S THE DEAL....
Sylar didn't know how to use his power at first, as he didn't know how to activate it. Once he realized that his talent is "fixing" things, he carried that over to people - by talking to the professor, he found out that people's souls reside in the brain, along with their powers. So in effect, he is not just stealing or taking their powers - he's absorbing their powers and their souls....
The more people he kills, the more powers and knowledge he absorbs. His skill is similar to the political brother's power (the one who can mimic powers) but not as passive. And he enjoys the killing.

Sylar is like Micah, he has the ability to make broke things work. or so it seems. Perhaps if Sylar kills Micah then he will be able to do that. Right now it seems that he can not sense Heros but when he locates them he kills them and steals their powers. He apparently stole the power to shoot lasers out of his fingers. He has also stole the power to learn rapidly from Charlie. Who knows what else he has stolen but he did manage to get back up from that fall without Claire's power so he must be pretty durable. Of course that does make you wonder why he went after Claire. All he knew is that a cheerleader ran into a fire and saved a guy. He had no idea what she was capable of.

Sylar has more powers than we know because they didn't show every power that he took. what we know: When Sylar first meets Chandra Suresh six months prior to the series' starting point, he describes having intuitive aptitude, the ability of knowing how things work by looking at them. This ability to see and manipulate patterns within complex systems made him an expert at restoring time pieces Powers taken by Sylar: Character Acquired Power Brian Davis Telekinesis James Walker Unknown(Frozen power probably) Charlie Andrews Eidetic memory Zane Taylor Molecular manipulation Dale Smither Enhanced hearing Isaac Mendez Precognition Ted Sprague Radiation manipulation People have been telling you that sylar got ability to influence behavior (from Eden whom he killed) However this is not true, Sylar never killed Eden, she shot herself to prevent Sylar from acquiring her power.

I think he gets the powers of those that he kills. He didn't have any powers until he killed that Brian Davis guy...who had telekenesis...then, Sylar goes back to the Dr's apartment and does the same moving the glass trick.

I believe Sylar can take on other Heros powers when he kills them. He has the list of names from the Dr and is killing them/stealing their powers.

He can understand how other's power work similar to how he look into the workings of a watch/clock. Remember that he said "it's the brain" ? So if he knows how other's power work, he can learn (or steal) the other's power.

Well, like the others all said, but he is obviously using the brains for something because he keeps opening their heads and removing the brain. Maybe he is finding a way to control the "special" part of their brain. Or maybe he is injesting them to gain their power. yuck.

From what I saw, it looks like he kills people for their powers...I don't know what he does with the brain though...Maybe he eats it.
