a 29 is a fairly decent starter tank not too big and dont require a massive amount of mainteance as far as live rock its good to start with it on day one so it will cure in your tank. stay away from mandarin gobys i know there pretty and hard to ignore but they require a large tank and a ton of live rock i wouldnt keep one in less than a 55 gallon tank with at least 70 lbs of live rock after all that is all they eat (isopods copepods and other stuff on your live rock) you can do corals but reallize the equipment to keep them and the fish that you rule out when getting them
equipment to keep corals
protein skimmer
squid wavemaker power head (not absolutely necessary but will have much better luck)
compact flourescent lighting at least 120 watts
the addition of calcium strontium molibdium iodine and essential elements
calcium addition is best done by limewater or kalkwasser must be precise with this and add slowly as per directions on bottle otherwise this stuff can crash a tank but has the best results
anyway in my opinion dont do corals yet untill you get this fish only tank down for a while
clownfish stay with only one type of clown in that size tank if ytou get more than one type you will probly have fights and tangs need a ton of space to swim as a baby a yellow can go in a 29 but will outgrow it fairly fast if you get a tang get it close to the last fish you put in they get highly territorial and will fight other fish put in after them

welcome to the saltwater world. the 29 is a good starter but stay away from live coral to expensive and extremely hard to keep it's best to leave that in the ocean. live rock is a good choice but not the sand use crushed coral rock and gravel filter along with the your other filtration method hang on or canister.now for the fish i have a few years at this stay away from mandarin's and butterfly high dollar fish that will more then likely be dead in 2 months or less. pick your fish wisely i wouldn't put more then 6 fish in that tank 2 clowns a dwarf angel and a yellow tang or two.good luck

i say go for it. sand and live rock help as a biological filter. just allow ur tank at least a cpl weeks for it to cycle. then start with a cpl tank-raised clowns. perculas are the best bet. u may also want to put about 5 astrea snails and 5 red or blue legged crabs into help clean the rock and also help to cycle the tank. also, stay away from mandarins and butterflyfishes. A mandarins main food is copopodswhich grow on the rock and in the sand. they take awhile (mths) to grow. Yellow tangs are pretty hearty, just keep them as either a single or a trio. otherwise, a pair will fight each other , just be patient and it'll be a blast

i am getting a 29 gallon for christmas, but am going to put an oscar in it, it sounds like you have done your research, and make sure the fish will go well together. You never know if you are going to have luck with a fish, so i would say at least start off with an inexpensive fish, and work your way up from there, and don't choose territirial fish, because it will be less fun to watch fish gain up on another fish and kill it. Choose peacefull fish, and ones that don't need live or expensive food.

Live rock requires special treatment and food. Mandarins are super fragile.
