I had a professor in college that within 50 years or(2000) the US would no longer be. It will be the next fall of a world power...the way things look he might be right do you agree?

First off, I strongly disagree with the person right above me, but respectfully so. I just don't think it's possible that a wack country could get enough weapons to "destroy" earth. And we wouldn't need to destroy the earth to respond. I just think that is an unlikely scenario. Will nukes be lit off in our time? Probably, but I don't think it will destroy the world.

However, regarding your specific item, your prof is right that the United States is destroying itself. Here are my points:

* Dysfunctional families. 50% divorce rates, parents working two jobs, single parents, teen parents (on the rise). Through our history we have relied on a solid social foundation, where families were expected to raise kids right. That doesn't happen now, and once you start sliding, it is near impossible to stop. On this point, I see the reasoning behind diehard conservatives and their hate for liberals. Well, I am a liberal (so to speak), but I am a firm believer in a solid family, with children being dealt with strictly as needed (not beat, but made to know the rights and wrongs).

* Media onslaught. Gets worse and worse. MTV, television in general. I don't even like taking my kids to supposed "G-rated" movies anymore. Pop culture, or whatever you call it, is slowly destroying our traditional culture. And with kids and too much free time, video games, internet, and tv really are doing some damage.

* Educational issues. In this day and age, it is impossible to "leave no child behind". Our schools should be geared to handle the upper level kids, college bound kids. Riff-raff that are there for fun and games should have a half-day school, and job corps the other half to get real life skills. Our college-bound learners are being brought down by an increasing number of riff-raff kids.

* Economical issues. Because of educational issues, and greed on the profit margin, companies are outsourcing white-collar jobs to India and China, where better educated people will work for less pay.

There is more. I think your prof is right in a way. We are losing our edge.

It is kind of a scary thought, but if we continue on the path that we are on, it seems like the country could easily destroy itself. However, I think that Americans are starting to realize that our actions really do have consequences and we do not rule unchallenged over everyone else in the world. If everyone in this country stops allowing the government to start wars and violate our rights as citizens, then everything will be fine. We must also make improvements in science. Our country is extremely conservative, and it is causing countries like china to surpass us in science and technology, and I think it's about time that we made some progress. The midterms were a massive step forward, but we still have a long way to go.

what do you mean by fall? cease to exist totally or just be lesser in importance and power? this is very vague. also what is the reason he believes this. it could be true or not but by different reasons.

If you are meaning the faux democracy yes, republics are destined to fail. they have never worked in the history of the world. Its curruptable and the voters are dumb enough to elect the currupt.

If you are talking destruction could be, roman and bryzantine history mirrors us to a T and if we fail to recognize and adjust we will follow their footsteps.

If you are talking about over taken. Could be we allow the so called minorities to run free to "appease" and not to "offend" this has already caused the rape of denmark, france and spain so it could happen here too.

are any of these fixable. Yes but like any problem the first step is recognition, then confrontation. we have yet to begin either of these so we will have to see.

I think that what is going down is everything. from global warming to the wars all over the globe.
It is only a matter of time until some radical group gets a nuclear weapon and starts an all out nuclear war. They are patient and take their time. We want to do it now and it gets us into trouble.
They may at this time have bombs planted in every major city in the USA. Waiting for the right moment.
I heard talk of putting them on trucks and driving them to every major city. Park it and be out of the country when it blows.
Russia has the bomb and no money. Those middle east people have oil and they are rich. Pakistan and India has the bomb.
The world hates the USA and they are not like the Russians.
The russians didn't want to die, so MADD worked and the cold war went on. These people are different, they want to die in a jihad. A holy war. They will not stop until they destroy the world;.
that is a fact. Look what they are doing in every major country?
From Africa to Afganistan to Russia to the three civil wars that are about to rage over there. Who gets blamed for their wars?
they all blame the USA.

Every world power eventually falls, that's a given. But I don't think there's any clear way of knowing a time frame because it depends so much on circumstances, and there's no way to definitively predict what those will be.

We won't be the strongest country in the world in 50 years. We're racking up debt like crazy, much of which is financed by China. They're poised to become the next superpower.

Is your professor hiding in a cave in Afghanistan?
George Soros is sure trying to end us but hopefully Mainstream America will crush his attempts with the Courage that has made us the success we are.

If the Democrats get enough Power and have their way, we will become a Socialist/Communist Nation.
If so, your professor will be right.
(But, was your professor an old Hate-America Hippie that never took baths? And still Hate America?)

Your professor was a fatalist at best and an idiot at worst.

It case it didn't get through, I don't agree.
