Not wrong at all.

Originally, on the original Severn Bridge (largest single span suspension bridge in the world by the way) the tolls were much lower and charged in both directions.

Some time later, some clever person worked out that if you had tolls only on one end you could make a much wider tollbooth plaza and have more lanes so less congestion (it used to be really horrid). Also, that way you only had to stop in one direction, also reducing congestion.

Quite why they arranged it so that the queue tailback exends on to the bridge side, rather than the land side I really don't know :-(

Some years later, when the SSC company undertook to build the second crossing, they were "given" the original bridge and allowed to recoup costs of building and maintenance (Severn Bridge is very old now) from both crossings. That was when the toll hiked quite considerably.

However, it should be said that, whereas the old bridge had to shut in high winds, the SSC stays open almost all the time (except very high winds) and, for those that really think it's too expensive - there was a time when I had to drive all the way from Cardiff up to Gloucester and back down to Newport because the bridge wasn't open.

Suddenly £5 didn't seem very expensive at all!

Twisted is right - the toll is open for 24 hours. The Severn Bridge is pretty amazing though. Long time since I've been to Wales.

Tamar Bridge Toll Charge

All toll roads, bridges, tunnels, etc in the U.K. are owned and operated by private firms. They have a right under British law to charge any person travelling along/across them, a 'reasonable' fee to to so.

Many years ago, when there was only one Severn Bridge , you were charged to travel both ways. After the Second Severn Crossing was constructed, it became free to leave Wales.

By the way, the S.S.C. was built by, and is owned, operated and maintained by, a FRENCH company!

I think that there shouldn't be any toll on the severn bridge at all because it is part of the M4. we also pay enough in road taxes to be able to cross for free.

Good question... I don't think it's wrong though, I don't think there's a law saying you have to charge both ways... AFAIK, you only pay one way on the Tamar Bridge, going away from Cornwall, and also on the Forth Bridge in Scotland.
