When born: Female is a Filly. (Just remember both start with an F).
Colts are males.
When Fillies come of age of 4, they are called Mares.
When colts become mature age of about 2, they are either called stallion or standing stud (depending on breeding status).
If not, the colt is called a gelding....whenever he gets castrated.
