Right now I am in the process of getting a site up and running that may interest you. It is for people who work from home. While it is still in the foundation building stages, I am doing certain types of free advertising. Have a look for yourself--

Visit forums that relate to the product that you're selling. Become a specialist at your product. Answer questions much like I'm doing now that will help people.
Don't worry about giving out free information, if you are giving quality answers then the online community will start respecting your opinion.
Make sure that you have a website otherwise forums aren't that effective. Every one of your posts must have a link to your website. You'll soon see a steady stream of leads coming your way.
If you want your website hitting the first page of the major search engines then your site must be professionally optimized. This may take a few months until you start seeing results but this form of advertising is sustainable. You'll only need to do a few tweaks here and there to stay ahead of your competitors.
It's no good just placing adverts all over the web. If you're activity online is high and you're exposing yourself to new leads then it's just a matter of time.
Good luck

Are you wanting to advertise online or offline?
There are a few ways you can drive traffic or advertise your business online and best of all they're free...
1. Place a free classified ad

Free Ads Directory

2. Write a press release and submit it to http://www.prweb.com
These things should start the ball rolling in gettting your business advertised.

A simple and FREE way to attract & keep customers is through a "giveaway". Go to freetravelcoupons.biz and use coupon code 'gogogo' for a great promotional tool.

It depends on what type of business you have. You could do flyers on windshields, local newspaper, cable tv, your local high school newspaper, local radio.
Good luck in the New Year!
