A man of about 40 wrapped his mother in cellophane and placed her body in a freezer. She had died of natural causes (at 91 yrs.old) three days before. Before he put her in deep freeze his slept beside her in bed. He was a Buddhist but lost contact with their community when his mother fell ill. He took care of her for 5 years.

Yesterday, a Canadian judge released the man who had rejoined his Buddhist roots. The man had been diagnosed as a bipolar schizopheric who had no mental care. The judge concluded that the man did not kill or do bodily harm to his mother and therefore concluded this was not a murder.
How would you have reacted to this case?

It's too bad the guy's going to walk away without further treatment, but in the US, that's the law. If he didn't commit a crime, he's free to go. The body does have to be disposed of properly.
Am I missing something here?

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the man's actions. Sounds to me like he treated his mother and her body with respect.

How sad. The man obviously was mentally ill and didn't really do anything wrong. I hope he is now receiving help for his condition.

judges have to go by the law, so i suspect no major laws were broken.

it seems odd to us that a person would do this. mental illness is a funny thing. i'm glad the guy is back with his homeys.

No crime was committed. Very weird, but if he didn't try to mutilate or have sex with the corpse, no crime. I feel bad for the sond.
