This has happened to two people I know. The first guy said he did it after being confronted by a bear that was only 10yds from him. The second was a friend of my son's who did it the first time he landed a jet fighter on an aircraft carrier.

Yes.
It is believed to be part of the "fight or flight" stress response.
It reduces the need for internal functioning which could divert resources in the body which would be needed for fleeing or fighting. It also lightens your weight with the assumption that this will aid you in fleeing the situation. It also may dissuade the attacker (would YOU attack someone who had just defecated in front of you?).
In evolutionary terms, it's actually your body doing you a favour!

Yes. Your body goes into a 'Survival Mode, it can be similar to receiving gunshot wounds ~ I was told, later, 'stab' wounds too, but I suspect that it depends on various aspects of the wound / trauma.
The body excretes as many waste products in order that the system (i.e., 'the body') can maximise its chances of survival.
'Shock' in itself can have an extremely detrimental effect to the psychi. During WW2 a British unit moving on the Belgian / German border came under fire as they exited their vehicles to brew up tea. A lone sniper fired one round and hit a British Private solider in the back, the round having passed through his army pack, was in reality almost a 'flesh wound.'
A squad went off to locate the sniper (and were successful) while 'the mates' of the wounded soldier gathered around to watch the Medic fix him up.
At that time, the unit themselves had experienced very little fighting, so this was an episode of excitement. They hummed and hawed as the medic went about getting the pack and battledress off of the victim, and then in fun and an attempt at humouring him, they whistled as 'the wound' was exposed and told him how awful it looked and that he'd be sent off to hospital etc ….at which point, he died.
He didn’t die from his wound itself which was superficial, but from the shock (it was believed) which was exacerbated by what 'his mates were saying' ~ in their well meaning attempt to humour him.
Ok. So now you know. Happier now Mmmm?
Sash.
