When I was young, video games had a joystick and two buttons, and it was good.

I got to play with an Xbox 360 last week, and I couldn't figure the darn thing out. There were 2 joysticks, a thumb controller, and way too many buttons. I couldn't figure out what buttons to hit or what joystick to use.

I swear I'm starting to feel like the Grumpy old man from SNL.

I totally agree with you. Although I can handle many of the more complex games that use a lot of buttons, most of the time it is just a big headache for me and I just want to play something that's simple and easy to get into. There have been many times I didn't want to bother with a game because the controls were just too confusing or complex and I just didn't see fit to bother with it. And some of them can be very much so!

The reason why video games and their controllers are becoming more and more complicated is because video games have evolved to catering more and more towards the hardcore gamer crowd. Over the years the people who religiously play video games know specifically what they want to see from developers - more and more refined and complex gameplay, battle, menu and status systems, and so developers in turn comply by making games more complicated. In effect, this catering is towards "the hardcore" gaming crowd while putting in little consideration that the game may be an off-putter for newcomers. Of course, this won't matter at all if the main selling audience for the game are the hardcore gamers.

Video games then become very in-depth and enjoyable for seasoned gamers, but extremely intimidating for those who don't play games or haven't played them in a while. Picking up a controller full of many buttons and two analog sticks is very discouraging and very much an obstacle to someone who has not become accustomed to playing such games. It might seem easy to the avid gamer who has been gaming for years and years and are used to all those buttons, but certainly not so simple for many, many people.

Gaming is a great hobby, but when there is a ten foot hurdle to jump over first if you want to get there, many people are just not going to bother.

Not all games are becoming more complicated. There are still a pretty good amount of new games coming out that either don't take much skill to start playing, or only use minimal buttons to play.

However, many games, such as the one you were playing (most likely), ARE more complicated. These types of games attract a certain audience. The people who play these games have experience playing video games, and understand the controls pretty quickly as they've played games of the same control scheme before. These games aren't aimed at those who really don't have much experience with current generation gaming.

Contrary to what the others have said, video games are becoming more mainstream. Once complex genres such as RPGs are moving towards the mainstream to allow more casual gamers to play. (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) Games are moving to less HUD displays and more intuitive ways to convery information.

You have to consider the technology back then; games had little storage space and the circuitry was expensive, hence two button controls and very simple games. With newer technology, more buttons could be implemented at a reasonable cost until what we have today.

I don't know about you, but video games back in that era sucked. Old school != good.

You are so right, they really are. I suppose ever company is craving to get ahead in the gaming market and are trying to install more depth into their games. The gaming industry is starting to evolve. You have a really good point, it's making me think actually... it's time they started thinking of the enjoyment factor again, not complicated systems!
