I have some cop friends. Here is the bad part that some people know about when they say those things.
You work all weekend and holidays for a long long long time. So when every friend you have wants to go see the fireworks on July 4th, guess where you are. Yes, directing traffic.
Hours can be brutal.
Tough to have a relationship with someone who is not a cop. And the pay vs other jobs is not the greatest.
There is a lot of boring paperwork too, its not all glory.
And 1 of my three cop friends burned out and is now in real estate.
These are all the things that cause people to say what they do.
If this doesnt bother you, then who cares what they think. Do it!

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a police officer as long as you understand the world you'll be getting into. Among the daily danger, you're basically going to see people going through some of the worst times in their life, which can be stressful to say the least. Like others have said, you're going to be working many of major holidays. It's a 24/7/365 job that not only affects you, but your relationships and family life. If you're willing to make those sacrifices, it can be a very rewarding career.

It's not for everybody. It's not for most people. Most people judge a job by how easy it is. A few don't take difficulty as a minus, but as a challenge. It requires old fashioned notions like courage and honor and duty. Not something many people understand.
Don't ask a bunch of paper shufflers who never had the guts to consider being a modern warrior if you should do it. Don't do it to impress anybody but yourself.
My partner is a 5' 1" 110 pound chick who's been a cop for 14 years now. She's the finest person I'll ever know, and the only one that makes me feel safe with my back to the door.
Your friends and relatives don't have to have it in them to understand. You do.

zards is right...not to mention the increased risk of alcoholism, divorce, and suicide. And seeing **** you'll have to live with for a zillion years. Being out in the cold, or the heat, or the rain, or the snow. And having to deal with the same shitbirds over and over and over again. Going to court. Picking up drunks and having them puke in your unit. And having to clean it up.
I could go on, but you get the point.
