It depends on where the slice is.
It is inhumane to decapitate anyone from any other position on the neck other than from spinal cord to the front.
When you slice from the sides or the front to the back where the cord is, the person or animal suffers pain and misery. That is because they will feel the slice and the sawing back and forth, but if they are cut from the spinal cord straight through without sawing, there will be less pain. Think of the guillotine, head sliced off from back of neck, then head dropped into basket.

Depends on the method. Guillotine is pretty painless. Sword or Axe could be pretty painful, and penknife or saw really painful.

It's not so bad once you've done it three or four times. I advise using a pillow though or the "thunk" might wake up the neighbors.
