I'm a professional in the industry, so I can say critics and fans alike can tell you that all love Sonic, but Shadow is the lamest thing the franchise could have ever created.

The majority of people love Sonic the most because he's a classic icon in gaming. Shadow is lame excuse for not having any imagination.

My son is 9 and my daughter is 6 and they both love Sonic. They play the video games all the time. I don't know the girl hedgehog's name but she is my daughters favorite.

Most all people love Sonic.
Shadow is more of a love-it-or hate-it character. Most people who hate him however, hates him only because he's starting to "take the spotlight" from Sonic. And you know that many people like him because...well, how else would he have started to "take the spotlight"? XD

I wouldn't rank it as one of the most popular game series, but it's definitely one of the best Sega offers.
For me personally, I'm not a fan of Sonic. The original Sega versions are decent at best.
