Year after year the media/nation says its hard to go undefeated in a season in the SEC. Has this become an excuse for the Conference teams to get to the National Championship? Remember, there are teams throughout history that have had to beat 4 top ten teams in a single year to win the national championship, Does the SEC nowadays have a legitimate excuse?

Florida coach Urban Meyer has recently come out and complained about the BCS because of rewarding "style points" rather than solid victories over REAL football teams in "tough conferences" (i.e. the all-powerful SEC).

I'm tired of SEC teams justifying their imperfect records by falling back on, "Well, we're in the SEC."

Here's an eye-opener: If you reference the mean (i.e. "average") ranking of all 119 1-A football teams, the average ranking of the SEC is 35 - and the average ranking of the Pac-10 is 37. Certainly no one walks around championing the Pac-10 as "the toughest conference", even though their strength is statistically equivalent to the SEC.

Using the same source, we see that the average ranking of every team USC has beaten is 35; the average ranking of every team Florida has beaten is 44. Yet, somehow, Florida deserves more than the rest of us because, "they're in the SEC."

It is a tough conference, but it's program "prestige", not the raw numbers, that have people bowing down to the SEC.

Stop the complaints and let the games speak for themselves.

Top to bottom, it is by far the most difficult conference in the nation. Those historical teams have a point, but that is not the reality in a normal year. Even the unranked teams in the SEC can be extremely dangerous, so you don't get the number of conference "cupcake" games that other schools get. It is quite clear that the SEC is the premier conference in college football, and not simply "an excuse" for the teams in the SEC.

To the guy above me, one of OSU's losses was pre 1990, therefore it's a two game edge to the SEC. Given lowly purdue took mighty Georgia to overtime twice, I think it says they are about even. The point he was making is even if the SEC has an edge, it's very slight. If OSU was out of the equation, the big ten dominates. I think at the end of the day, this stuff goes in cycles, and there really isn't much difference between the big 4 conferences, over an exended period of time.

Teams that are not in the SEC will never understand. People say its the toughest conference because it is. I don't think its an excuse for losing, but reality. What team, even Big 10 team, would like the following on their schedule:

LSU
Auburn
Florida
Tenn
Georgia
Bama
South Carolina (with spurrier)

The SEC is a power conference that would benefit from a playoff system.

Listen
I don't have enough time to sit here and type what i would like to tell you, and unless you have a open mind you wouldn't care what i have to say. Sounds like you have already made your mind up. The people who reply "yes" to this question does not have a team in the SEC and those that do have a team in the SEC will reply "no". That is your answer

the SEC is by FAR the most difficult conference in the nation. I have spent years watching these teams play, and if you want to get into this year...lets look at the BCS: FLA, LSU in the top 5! and ARK , TENN and AUB following them up in the top 25... maybe if you put **** off teams like notre dame in a CONFERENCE!!!!!!!!! then maybe there would be more teams in there!

and for another thing, the SEC NEVERRR gets away with anything when it comes to throwing their names around positively... they never get positive national coverage(Corso?? Herbstreit>??)....

Yes it is an excuse. The SEC is a good confrence but its no reason to say you lost. If your team was excellent it wouldnt matter what confrence you were in. You wouldnt lose any games. Its been since 2004 that an SEC team has won and they wont be returning this year. The SEC isnt the best in the nation.
