He should be sworn in using the Bible. American tradition should not compromise because of someone's religion. He should compromise. America should not

I do not think that Congressmen are sworn in with The Holy Bible or The Koran. It is a mass swearing, much like when people enter the military.

The Bible. Although the purpose of swearing on the Bible came from the concept that swearing on the it would make a person more likely to keep the "oath" they were swearing to...I don't think politicians of any ilk realize how serious the promise they are making is anymore and I don't think a Muslim will put any stock what so ever into swearing on either one...but I digress...to answer your question...The Bible

Muslim, Chinese, Jew, Catholic, or aetheist--the bible should be tossed out of a government "swearing-in" and be replaced by the American flag. This symbol once stood for a proud country of patriots. Maybe this would be one step toward separation of church and state and also remind the elected who they are to serve. Recently, most could have been sworn in by placing their hand on a Big Mac or Wal Mart smiley face.

if tradition fails to adapt with the times it becomes fanaticism.. there is nothing wrong with him using the Koran.. the use of the Bible is about what it means to the person.. to him the Koran is what has that meaning...

jp, it is a mass swearing at the state level (at least in my state) but i can't recall a national swearing in so i can't say for sure.

gray wolf, i like that idea and think it would be a fine way to progress the tradition.

Yes, for the very same reason that illegal Mexicans should learn our language if they want to become legal citizens.

There are just certain standards in place in our government that are part of the American tradition for a good reason, and if you (the all-encompassing you) don't like it, then you know where you can go - out of the country.

If we use the bible for Christians we should use the Koran for Muslims. That being said what ever happened to separation of church and state? We should NOT use the bible or the Koran for this. As discus ting as it is to me to use the Koran, it's only fair to say the same about the bible. Remember the constitution? We need to get back that. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!

He is first a politician. So it makes no difference if he swears on the Bible of the menu from the Capital Ritz Carlton. The end result will be the same.
