hell no. back in the day, everyone use to smoke. you can blame all these damn health freaks, new laws, and lawyers. It's rediculous. Why would you want people to quit, because they finally put a warning on the side of a pack of cigarettes after a couple hundred years of smoking? Everyone knows that it's not good for your health, yet we really dont care. I've seen and heard about a lot of people dying even though they ran 10 miles a day, ate healthy, and didn't smoke. The way life is now, life is already short, I'd rather die with a cigarette in my hand, a beer in the other, and bring on the red meat. Oh yea, you dont need to bother wanting the price to go up, and the amount in a pack to go down, we can already thank the US government for taxing the crap out of tabacco companies. They are only trying to make a living just like the rest of you stuck up, wealthy bastards. If you are worrying about the air that the non-smokers are breathing in, why don't you ask for the price of gas to go up as well? There are a lot more people driving around increasing the amount of chemicals in the air. If you are really concerned about everyone smoking because of it getting into your lungs, why don't you walk your *ss to work while you are at it. Go back 35 years ago (around 40 cents a pack). trust me, they are doing a good enough job making a smokers (my) life a little more difficult.

Why do you care? Don't smoke then if it bothers you. Smokers aren't allowed to smoke inside anywhere that I know except Vegas and casinos and even sometimes at outdoor events!! So what is the problem?? I don't know why people care so much about cigarettes. If you don't like them then don't get around them. And I don't think that's very fair, what happens if you had a habit that you couldn't kick and they raised the price on you....how would you feel?
P.S. I don't smoke anymore. I just get so uptight when people always complain about cigarettes. Like I said if you don't like them then stay away from them.

Interesting idea for sure. I used to be a smoker and I would have to say that even doing that wouldn't stop much. If people want to smoke, then they'll smoke. No matter how much it costs. It might cut the buying percntages a bit if that were to happen, but people would probably just buy two packs instead of one. If you're a smoker, you can't stop unless you really want to. Otherwise, nothing will stop you. That's my opinion at least.

Overnight you'd have a black market in stolen or smuggled cigarettes selling at a fraction of your suggested price.
That's what made the Mafia so rich during Prohibition.
No law or policy was going to stop people from drinking, and no law or policy will stop smoking. People will do it for themselves, of they won't.
Period.

raising the price of a pack of cigarettes will not make people stop smoking, it is just like any drug, people that are hooked will cut corners somewhere else to support their habit, just like heroin, alcohol, marijuana....by raising prices of cigarettes you are only making tobacco companies richer

Why on earth would the cigarette makers do that? It'll only cost them money, getting people to quit. Think straight. This is capitalism we're talking about!

no matter what anyone does, people will still smoke.---just like people who do drugs will get them no matter what, they are not gonna quit because it is illegal. i know people who go to the indian reservations and pay 10 bucks a carton. so , there will always be a way to get your habit.

You are entitled to your opinion and so am I. I smoke and am in good health. It is not illegal to smoke cigarettes. Tobacco farming is a part of our history. Freedom of choice, I choose to smoke, and you choose not to. Let's all live in peace.........:)
