Until 4 years ago, my opinion of Americans was Rude, Loud, Arrogant, Inconsiderate. When I went to Mexico, this was justified.
3 years ago, I visited Upstate New York, and my opinion changed, I have met a lot of good people, not many of them are rude and arrogant, in fact, very few.
Originally being from England, I have learnt a lot about American upbringing since I have been here.
There are US flags everywhere, people are proud to be American.
Children are taught the national anthem at a young age, they are proud, and their nation makes them feel proud.
They are taught that America is the best country in the world, the Land of the Free.
70% of Americans do not hold a passport, or have never left the continental US. They have never compared their country to another civilised country, so are naive in that respect, and they tend to regard other countries as less civilised, and inferior.
Generally, they are good people! I live here now, so they can't be that bad!

You're generally very polite, very bewildered by the hostility you get (perhaps less so with Dubbya in charge - some of the reasons must be obvious) and, in general pretty much like anyone else on the face of this planet.
Freedom to be what you can be, or wnat to be is a big plus - but that only really works well if you're well off to start with and white - but the land of opportunity is still working after a fashion.
Your problems come from rampant consumerism, the 'everything has a price approach', the fact that a worrying percentage don't seem to know there's anything beyond the borders - except Iraq, personally I really dislike your government officials approach to business but, if you like - most of this isn't down to the American people, it's your society - good and bad.
On balance, yeah - you Yanks are OK, your politicians - like ours - suck.

People think that Americans are arrogant and very cocky. That they do not have very good manners and are very sloppy. Americans are not very polite and always in a rush.
As for the country as a whole not just the people in it, I think people tend to think of America as a bully. America puts itself in others business whether it is the right thing to do or not. People fear America because it is a super power, that is why when America invades a country like Iraq it is seen as a threat.

I have limited experience of Americans, those I have met are far more open with their opinions than most British people, I don't mind that at all.
I have also met Mormons (church of Jesus Christ later day saints) in England, and though I don't accept their teachings, they did nothing to disgrace America.
I have some issues with the American, and the British governments, but that doesn't turn me against the American or British people.
The Americans I have met, I have liked.

I am taking America to mean the USA, not the continents of North and South America.
They are people. I have many different friends from many different parts of America. Generally I do not think that the majority of Americans have a great attitude towards people who are different from them and also are pretty greedy. There are, of course, millions of exceptions to this rule and many wonderful people live in America too.
I do not like the American government at all, nor many of the large American owned companies. No sir. I do not extend my dislike of the government towards the people of the USA.

I try to think about specific people, not define them by what country they live in. I know a lot of great American people and I've met some real nasty ones too. There are all types in all countries.
And I'd like to find out just how many Canadians "Jenny" has met. Some people are so judgmental....why is that?

I like them! I find them very warm people with an enthusiasm for life! When I went to California on holiday I found people in shops so much friendlier than over here in UK. People critisize them for being over the top and outrageous but at least they're friendly! I like the quirkiness!

Louder than Brazillians at a football match, ruder than French waiters in a Parisian restaurant, bigger than Italian mommas in their 40s, less educated than the average E grade student in Europe and more abusive of the English language than txt tlkers.
