Surprise! another oscar question from me, i just want as much imformation as possible. Does anyone have any tips on how to decorate an oscar tank? Please don't just copy stuff from websites, I am able to recognize it. I was wondering good ways to decorate their tank, like gravel compared to sand, is it better to put a large item in the middle rather than rocks on the sides of the tank ect. I saw a small one at a petsmart, and until i am getting a larger tank, he will go into a 29 gallon, please give me awnsers or stories to any oscar you have had. Anything you have beside tanksizes, i know all about them.

Gravel is a better alternative to sand because Oscars enjoy digging and rooting things up. In my tank I have a large piece of drift wood in the middle and a "anubis plant". (anubis plants is a great plant oscars because they are large, easy to take care of, they grow in any light condition, and they're tough so the oscar's constant digging wont bother them too much.) Along the sides I have boulders and rocks form sizes ranging medium to large--you can make caves with the rocks and the oscar likes a good hideaway at times. Remember to slope the gravel substrate from less to more from the front to back of the tank: it creates an illusion that makes your tank appear larger thn it actually is. Oh, and a 29 gallon tank is large enough.
Exp: i've had 3 before
*dont put more than two oscars in a tank at the same time. If you're getting two, makes sure they are both getting the equal amount of food and makes sure you get two that are around the same size. Try to avoid feeding them live foods such as goldfish-- feeding them goldfish makes the tank dirty and it makes your oscar aggressive towards other fish.

Seriously 29 g is to small for an oscar. Either go with barebottom or coarse gravel to give him as much room as possible to swim in, but it won't be long until thats not enough, If on the other hand you get a larger tank (55g +) driftwood, large rocks, and some of the tougher plants such as large anubias would work place them as you like just make sure he can still swim, and don't be to surprised if he redecorates the tank on his own... oscars will do that. Avoid sand, some oscars have enjoy digging a lot, and its a pain when they keep stiring it up into the water.

a 29 gallon tank is too small one Oscar at a adult size need at least 55 gallons and believe me if your Oscar is small now in 2-3 months it will get very big they grow fast about a inch a month for the first 6-8 months. As far as decorating it I would not recoomend sand for oscars like to dig and will cause your tank to be cloudy alot and is harder to clean. I would put a large rock in it so it can have a hiding place make sure it is large though because soon he will be able to move it around also add a few plants if you like

your best bet would be gravel, a few larger stones, maybe a slate or a driftwood on the side of the tank or even the middle. My oscars always moved stuff around the tank until THEY were happy with the arrangement.
Life plants will be torn to shreds. Plastic plants might work but eventually will be pulled around and torn.. Large driftwood is great for oscars to hide behind or even attack when they get ansy.
I have black sand in my oscar tank-and looks awesome with my 10 inch albino tiger oscar. But cleaning sand is a LOT of work and it clogs up all filters. You want to use gravel.

The fish died for the reason which you positioned them right into a sterile aquarium. Fish could in no way be presented to an aquarium that has no longer been cycled, and then they could be presented slowly. 2 Oscars and 20 feeders will reason too extreme of a bio-load for an unicyclesd tank. If Petco gives you cash decrease back i'd propose paying for an aquarium e book until eventually now fish. confident you're able to tell Petco. with a bit of luck they have an recommended fish guy/gal (my community Petco does not) which could furnish you each and every and all the help you decide on.

well, i have 3 oscars myself a black tiger, red, and super red albino i think your tank may be a little too small as well but ive seen it done before.
you might wanna use gravel since it would probably work best for oscars and decorate with rocks since the oscars cant damage them and add different shaped rocks like a square shaped compared to a round shape and put them all around the tank not just the middle or sides.
also decorate with plastic plants since they cant be torned up and left floating in your water and use live or artificial drithwood it adds shape and color and provides great hiding spaces for bottom feeders and as well the oscar.
but if you do like to decorate with live plants use very big and hardy live plants, ones that can stand a occasional bite.

man we had an orange tiger osrar ne was cool he got very big ....we had every thing in the tank he was like a dog had to play with every thing see how the pick up rocks weell he would pick up marbles and when he spit them out i thought it would break the glass we had live plants and he'd pull them up
id just go with larger rocks with plastic plants we would build like a 2 walled hut for the goldfish to hide under but they would always wander out lol i miss him he was about8 or 9 inches long verry nice to look at but he would even bang the heater and it dident work right but he still lived lol and he would bang on the lildoor to the tanksome times any ways have fun lol
