It really depends upon the company or agency, but in most work places HR is quite powerful. Usually someone from HR is on the interview team, and will be involved in hiring. I would recommend staying on good terms with HR if you are really interested in a job with this company.

HR, or human resources, usually has a huge part when you apply for a job. They're usually the people to review your application, set up the interview, and in some cases -- do the actual interview. If and when you get the job you're applying for HR will be your "mom" of sorts at the company. They will help you with tax questions, they are the ones you talk to about promotions, problems with co-workers.. etc. etc.
So, yes -- if you're having a hard time with the HR department, that doesn't speak very highly of the company.

Most HR departments act as the "gate keeper" with respect to employment. You've got to get past them to the decision maker. If the future boss wants you it really doesn't matter what HR thinks in most companies (assuming you are honest, legal, etc.)
Recognizing this you've got to do HR's bidding to get the interview with the person who matters. If you have a particular in demand skill set you are often better off directly approaching the line employee in a company and skipping the HR guys. The trick, of course, is to find who that person is. Networking is your best bet in this case.

I don't think so. The place should have the ultimate decision. They may ask HR what they thought of you but they may also know how their HR is and not put much merit on their words. I haven't had a lot of jobs but in the ones I have had HR had no power compared to department I was interviewing with.
Good luck with the job.

It's my experience that in large corporations, the HR department is able to tell the hiring manager who they may or may not hire. In other words, once the hiring manager has made their decision, the HR department is the one who has the final say.
It doesn't sound like you would really want to work for that company anyway if their HR department is that bad.

HR is like mother, when your hired. They only provide services what the BIG boss has provided.
Be like a football player, do your homework, you don't want to be on a lossing team. Or, negotiate when goals are met. HR is just the middle folks. The BEACH of the company or a company.

Yes HR is more powerful than the department. If they don't think you fit the job they don't pass on your resume. So the department will never have a chance to say otherwise. The department will never know because they never received your resume

HR will generally screen canidates, provide some answers to questions before the interview, i.e. benifits. They may also do drug screening and a skills assessment. You probably have to make it past HR to get an interview. Don't be afraid to be persistant, just don't be nasty in the process. If they have no interest, they will let you know. Probably in writting.

It happens to me once, HR recruiter was *****, that doesn't mean the company is bad @ all. Contact them again and tell them your interest in the job, if that doesn't work, then Try to contact the head of the department you want the job on. Good luck and keep the good manners always!

HR tend to think they are the most important people in the universe and know everything about anything. All they do is create little empires for themselves and think up stupid rules and set idiotic tests for job applicants. I don't like HR people. Unfortunately they will be the ones you have to get past to get the job.
